Our Services
Since 1994, S4S has been providing services on a part-time basis to urban teenagers in the 11-21 age groups. Our workshops are highly effective and tailored to provide female support and life skills instruction. So much so that we even have alumni as mentors. We have successfully impacted sexual promiscuity and teen pregnancy. To date, we have documented only two pregnancies and two abortions out of 728 program participants. That is a .5% pregnancy rate. Furthermore, all of our participants graduate high school, including 22 who have gone on to college.
S4S services are sought after, because our staff conducts extensive research to deliver the most responsive and interactive workshops. In order to increase their desire to learn more about any given topic, we utilize reflective materials that incorporate the participants’ lifestyle and environment. Participants interact easier when they are comfortable and respect the source of their information. Our facilitators are excellent communicators that are very well received by the youth due to their personable approach and knowledge of topics presented.
Furthermore, most of the S4S facilitators have experienced and triumphed over many of the issues facing today’s youth. These experiences enable us to distinctly and easily establish our credibility with at-risk and maladaptive girls, thus laying the foundation for a receptive and trust-filled learning environment. Participants have indicated that they were able to learn more under our programs, because of the relaxed, nonjudgmental atmosphere created by the presenters.
For all packages of 3 or more workshops, a free orientation workshop is offered to familiarize the participants with the goals and objectives of The Survival Course and “Me First” Curriculum. Course topics, their goals, policies, procedures and expectations are also reviewed during the orientation. Participants are polled to determine their topics of interest, and S4S staff gets an opportunity to assess the participants’ social skills.
Workshops are ninety minutes and paced to meet the needs of the participants. At the start of each workshop the instructor identifies the course goal and objectives. Homework assignments are used to reinforce workshop lessons. Evaluations are distributed to participants at the end of each workshop to measure their comprehension of the materials, and their assessment of the relevancy of the workshop materials.
Program Reports provide an evaluation of each workshop. S4S staff tracks the accomplishments and challenges encountered by our staff and individual participants during workshop(s). Recommendations and strategies to reinforce positive behavior, academic and social change are also outlined.
Premium Packages
S4S workshops were developed by polling our participants, caregivers and educators to determine their topics of interest. It reflects current events and issues affecting urban America. Based on the frequency with which they are requested, S4S has identified a number of preferred workshops. These workshops have been conveniently bundled at a significant discount.
The Survival Course packages are custom-tailored workshops open to males and females in the 14-21 years age-group. Services focus on developing and strengthening the participants’ life skills, globalizing their world-view and preparing them for becoming responsible independent adults. “Me First” packages are custom-tailored gender-specific workshops for females in the 11-14 years age-group. Workshops are designed to build life skills and self-esteem, increase self-awareness and pass on the necessary coping skills to prepare females for transition into high school. |
